It’s Go-time for Controlling White Grubs in Cool-season Lawns
Now is the time to start making your preventative white grub applications to maximize control. Here’s how:
-
Timing is everything
- Regardless of what insecticide you use, the best practice is to start applications for grubs when you see the first adult beetles in flight (usually mid-June to mid-August) depending on your location, since damaging larvae are observed 2-4 weeks after adult beetles
- Most damage comes from animals feeding on larger larvae later in summer or fall, so it makes the most sense to apply later when adults are present to ensure control well into the fall
-
The latest grub control solution from Envu:
- Tetrino® provides excellent season-long control of all white grub species
- Tetrino also provides excellent knockdown and 6 to 8+ weeks of control of other problematic insects such as billbugs, sod webworms, cutworms or fall armyworms depending on the rate applied
- Unlike other diamides that require a minimum spray volume per label directions, Tetrino can be applied effectively through ride-on sprayers to lawn turf
-
Rates of Tetrino:
- 32 oz/A applied as a single application during peak adult flight (mid-June through mid-August) is recommended to ensure season-long grub control
- A split application of 16 oz/A + 16 oz/A can be used to target a wider range of pests throughout the season
- Other insect pests? Tetrino is also highly effective at controlling fall armyworms for 8 to 10 weeks after application at 32 oz/A
-
Status of Merit®:
- The EPA still has not released the final decision on new restrictions on imidacloprid, the active ingredient in Merit, and we don’t expect this decision to affect labelling for another 12 to 24 months
- Local jurisdictions are starting to limit neonics, and those restrictions can go into effect immediately
- With Merit, it’s critical to use the full label rate (0.4 lbs ai/A per year) regardless of formulation. Be careful with some combination Merit/fertilizer products because their high label rate equates to less than 0.4 lbs ai/A
