Top Five Factors to Consider for Herbicide Application Timing

Top Five Best Practices for Herbicide Application Timing

Print page

To optimize herbicide application timing for weed control, you need to take the right factors into consideration long before you start spraying. Plan ahead to maximize results — and your budget.

seasonality, spring showers, rain, roads
1. Seasonality – Spring Is Good. Fall Is Better.

Spring can be wonderful, but it tends to bring a lot of uncertainties that can interfere with herbicide effectiveness. Variable rainfall, high temperatures and windy conditions can all make your hard work less effective. A fall application is among the best practices for weed control application because it extends the season. You’ll be able to spread out the application period and better utilize your crews and equipment.

Additionally, a fall application of Esplanade® 200 SC herbicide, Esplanade® Sure herbicide, Plainview® SC herbicide and/or Method® 240SL herbicide allows you to take full advantage of the soil residual benefits and flexibility of a Envu bareground program. Moisture throughout the winter months activates herbicides before weeds germinate and emerge in the winter and the following spring. Additionally, cooler soil temperatures in the fall and through the winter reduce the rate of microbial degradation of some herbicides.

2. Location, Location, Location

What applies to real estate goes double for successful weed management because rainfall, temperatures, weeds and soil types all vary widely across the U.S. The top weed control problems are different, too. In the West, managing weeds to reduce the risk of wildfire may be a primary concern. And in the East, invasive species management might be top of mind.

It’s important to work closely with your Envu area sales manager so they can provide expert guidance on the herbicide application timing and products that are most effective for your area. No matter your location, they can help formulate a plan to interrupt the cycle of seed production and germination.

3. Know Your Weed Species

Effective bareground control takes more than a one-treatment-fits-all approach. You need to know if your problem species are perennial, biennial or annual in order to determine the most effective products and application timing. Because of different weed life cycles, a fall application may be needed to take care of species that germinate later in the year.

Adding fall applications to your program can help you get ahead of weeds, break the reseeding cycle and achieve cleaner lands the following spring. While preemergent herbicides in late winter or early spring can stop growth before it starts, postemergent herbicides can help kill unwanted plants that have already sprouted in spring or fall.

You may still need to incorporate mechanical controls like mowing, but an effective herbicide application timing plan will help reduce the amount of mowing you need to do, saving you time, energy and money in the long run.

4. Root Out Herbicide Resistance

If you notice certain species of weeds surviving herbicide applications, you may be dealing with herbicide resistance. This phenomenon tends to be difficult to prevent because it can be a natural part of selection pressure. Using herbicides with multiple modes of action or using tank mixes can reduce the risk of developing resistance. Make sure you’re scouting your application areas regularly and noting any herbicide-resistant weed species so you can work with your Envu rep to formulate an effective plan as soon as possible.
