Herbicide Mixing Order Best Practices
Tank-mixing different Envu products can provide more effective weed control for a variety of vegetation management scenarios including roadside, utility, railroad and municipal land management. Combining products with different modes of action can also reduce the risk of developing herbicide resistance. To achieve maximum tank-mix results, it’s important to add herbicides in the right order and follow a few tank-mix best practices.
The Label Is the Law
The product label is a crucial source of information for tank-mixing order best practices, so make time to read it carefully. In addition to safe handling tips and correct usage rates for your equipment and situation, you should find mixing order information specific to the product. If no sequence is recommended, follow the order below, agitating as you go and using caution to minimize spills.
- Water-soluble bags
- Water-dispersible granules
- Wettable powders
- Water-based suspension concentrates
- Water-soluble concentrates
- Oil-based suspension concentrates
- Emulsifiable concentrates
- Adjuvants such as surfactants, oils, suspension aids, colorants, etc.
- Soluble fertilizers
- Drift retardants
Start With a Plan
Before you begin mixing, outline a plan that includes the following:
- Reading product labels and regulatory information;
- Identifying and setting up the ideal working location;
- Assembling and putting on proper PPE;
- Preparing for emergencies;
- Checking that all your equipment is clean and fully operational, from sprayers to measuring devices;
- Including time for complete mixing after adding each product; and
- Considering tank size and mix agitation.
Go Back to Basics
Here are a few other best practices to keep in mind:
- Consult federal, tribal, state and local regulations in addition to labels to make sure you comply with requirements for herbicide application and container disposal.
- Double-check your math to make sure you understand how to get from the usage rates on the label to the right solution strength.
- Use clean, dry measuring equipment that’s clearly marked for the amounts you need.
- Make sure you’re prepared to measure both dry ounces (weight) and liquid ounces (volume).
- Always add herbicides to at least half a tank of water.
- Never mix with bare hands; always use proper PPE.
- Maintain agitation when possible to ensure thorough mixing.
- Consult your Envu representative for precise tank-mixing recommendations.
