Better to be Early Rather Than Late with Spring Proxy®
We now know inconsistency in seedhead control with Proxy® in the past was mostly due to applications made too late in the spring. The fall primer application of Proxy has dramatically improved seedhead control and consistency, especially with the increasingly variable weather. Here’s advice to maximize seedhead control this spring:
- Traditional timings (see table) - these still work as general guidelines for the first spring Proxy application, but it’s always better to apply earlier than these timings especially if no primer application was made last fall
-
If a primer Proxy application was NOT made last fall:
- Apply Proxy as soon as the soil allows you to safely get a sprayer on the course
- Virginia Tech research shows that an additional Proxy application made almost any time during the winter even prior to 100% Poa annua green-up will improve seedhead control compared to the two traditionally timed spring applications alone
- If a primer Proxy application was made last fall – it still should be a priority to get the first spring Proxy application out as soon as possible. However, the primer Proxy application made last fall provides a week or two of greater flexibility with the first spring application.
- Second application - critical to extend control
- More than two spring applications – May be needed in areas with extended seedheads either due to geography or weather. Some areas in coastal regions or Pacific Northwest with extended seedhead periods may make 4 or more Proxy applications in late winter or spring with no negative turf effects
- Stressgard in any or all applications – improves turf safety, quickens spring green-up, and maximizes health
- Primo Maxx® or Anuew® in the second and later spring apps – extends control, but avoid these in the fall or early spring app

Seedheads of annual bluegrass can be effectively controlled with fall plus spring applications of Proxy (Envu)
Application | Timing | Product and use rate/1000 sq. ft. |
Late fall application | With the snow mold fungicide application or after growth slows | Proxy 5 fl. oz.+ Stressgard-containing fungicide |
First spring application | Always more effective to be early than late on spring applications. Initial application can be scheduled by:
