Protect Bermudagrass Greens from Winter Diseases

Print page

Disease control on ultradwarf bermudagrass greens during the winter play season is always difficult due to a combination of both biotic and abiotic stresses and slow turf growth.

  • The environment limits bermudagrass health
    • Short daylight, low light intensity reduces photosynthesis
    • Increased rainfall from this year’s El Nino saturates soils, limits root growth
    • Lower temperatures plus high winter play further stress turf
  • Cultural solutions can always help, especially in an El Nino winter
    • Raise mowing height incrementally or alternate mowing and rolling
    • Lightly sand topdress on a regularly basis to help raise “effective” height of cut
    • Vent with narrow solid tines to reduce compaction and increase soil oxygen
  • Plenty of pests to take advantage of limited growth
    • Nematodes weaken roots and increase root pathogen susceptibility
    • Pythium root rot, take all root rot, and large patch are the common root diseases now
    • Leaf spot is always a threat during the winter
  • Envu solutions

A benefit of Stressgard is improving photosynthesis, which is crucial on warm-season grasses during the winter months. Improved photosynthesis translates to improved density, less scalping, and better overall turf performance. Plus leaving an untreated area clearly shows the value of any application (Envu).
